Attraction and the Relationship With Your Parents
Studies have shown that men prefer to be with younger women while women prefer to be with older men. Because women want to feel safe and secure they feel more comfortable around mature men or in other words older ones.
Men on the other hand prefer women who are younger because a young age is a good indicator of a woman's health.
One interesting study has attempted to find out why certain kinds of women prefer certain ages in men. The study found out that if the age difference between the girl and her father was big then she might become attracted to older men.
Note that this won't happen unless the girl likes her father and thinks of him as a role model. The better the relationship between a girl and her father the more likely she will be looking for someone who looks like him when choosing a life partner.
The same goes for men, the better the relationship between a man and his mother the more likely he is going to look for a woman who resembles her.
Note that this selection process happens on the unconscious level based on the signals the unconscious mind notices. For example you will rarely find a woman who says that she likes a man because he reminds her of her father but instead her subconscious mind will notice some similarities between that man and the parent.
These similarities could take many forms such as:
1) Certain facial features
2) The way he talks
3) The way he walks or his body language
4) His tone of voice
5) His opinions or beliefs about life
If the relationship with the opposite sexed parent wasn't good then the opposite might happen. A girl might not fall for the man who reminds her of her abusive father even if that man wasn't abusive.
Now you might be asking yourself, why do some people always fall for their abusers?
The answer is simple. Some people prefer to avoid what happened in the past and to go on with a fresh start and that's why they will always repel those who remind them of their abusers. Other people want to become victorious over their abuser, so they get attracted to the people who look like him just because this gives them another chance to win!
If a father was always absent so that his daughter was emotionally hurt she might actually get attracted to men who are emotionally absent just to get another chance to tame the man who abused her.
People were also found to be attracted to the ones who share certain similarities with the ones they loved before. If a guy loved a girl but didn't manage to be with her then met a girl who looks like her a bit then he might fall for her.
The people we have dealt with in the past can affect the criteria we use when selecting a potential partner. If you had a good friend then for some reason he had to move to another town then there is a good possibility that you will feel that you want to become friends with people who look like that person.
If you met someone who looks like that friend then you might become close friends with him. If that friend was from the opposite sex then you might become attracted to him.
The same goes for bad relationships. If you hated a person because of his attitude then you saw someone who looks like him you might then feel uncomfortable around that new person and as a result never become close to him.
If you had a tough boss who used to treat you in a bad way then there is a great possibility that you are going to be repelled by whomever reminds you of him consciously or unconsciously.
